Word order in English and Wh-questions
Word order in English sentences:
Subject + verb + object + place + time
I read a book at the seaside every summer.
He writes an article in his office every Wednesday.
Question Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Infinitive
What do you need?
Where do you go on Sundays?
In Yes-No questions (questions that we answer saying yes or no) there is NO Question Word.
Do you live in Rome?
Yes, I do.
Does she live here?
No, she doesn't.
Are you alone? No, I am not.
Subject + verb
The subject goes before the verb.
He sings.
They are leaving.
The subject in imperative sentences
Show me your dress, please!
Call her soon! She needs you.
Adverbs of frequency can be put between the subject and the verb BUT adverbs of frequency go after the verb when the verb is TO BE.
You rarely go to the beach.
They are often at the bar.
Verb + object
When there is an object in the sentence, we need to put it after the verb. Verb and object are together.
I would like you to go with me to the party.
I called her to remember her she had to go shopping for tomorrow's dinner.
Wh-questions
Wh-questions: what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why and how.
What are you doing here?
When is your birthday?
Where are you?
Who is he?
Whom are you going to the party with?
Which book is yours?
Whose phone is that?
Why are you here?
How old are you?
